Photo Tagging and Blurring

Photo Tagging & Blurring

To help you comply with new GDPR and safeguarding rules, Footsteps 2 now includes a tagging and blurring tool. This means that if you choose to share observations with a child's parents and carers, only the relevant faces will be shown in those photos.

To tag a photo on an observation, do the following:
  1.  Create or edit an observation.
  2.  In the 'Photos & Videos' section you are able to capture a photo using the device's camera or upload any photo which has been saved to the device.
Accepted file formats are: GIF, JPG, JPEG, PNG.

  3.  Once the photo has uploaded, click/tap on the  button underneath; a full-screen preview of the photo will be displayed.
  4.  Click/tap on the 'Tag' button:

  5.  You will notice that any faces the system has automatically detected in the photo will have a white border around them:

    Tag photo

If a face in the photo has not been automatically detected, you can click/tap-and-drag to draw a white border around the face. Any faces that remain without a white border will not be blurred if the photo is shared.

  6.  To tag a child in the photo, click/tap on their face; a list of names of the children included in the observation will be displayed:

    Tag child in photo

  7. Choose the child's name by scrolling through the list, or click/tap in the search field and begin typing the child's name to filter the list, and then click/tap on a name to tag the child.

If you tag multiple children in a photo, the system will automatically blur out the faces of all other tagged children, enabling you to share a group photo which each child's carers without violating  safeguarding regulations.

  8.  You can also tag staff members in a photo by clicking/tapping on their face and then selecting the 'Staff member' option at the top of the list; this will stop their face from being blurred if the photo is shared.
  9.  You can see what the photo will look like once it is blurred by clicking/tapping on the 'Preview blur' toggle:

Once you have finished previewing the photo, click/tap on the toggle again to return to the original photo.

  10.  If you do not want faces blurred in the photo, click/tap on the white border around each face and click/tap on the 'X' button in the corner of the border to remove it. The white border will disappear and the child's face will not be blurred.
  11.  Once you have finished tagging the photo you must click/tap on the 'Done' button in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen.
  12.  To return to the Observation form, click/tap on the 'Save' button.
If you decide you do not want to tag the photo, click/tap on the 'X' button.
